Barlmarrk Supermarket

Barlmarrk is the largest retail enterprise component of the Bawinanga Aboriginal Corporation (BAC) and serves the vital role of providing the Maningrida Community with fresh food, clothing and household necessities—all at competitive prices. Although it did not show financial growth in 2010-2011, the business was able to place a focus on consolidating the supermarket’s core business and preparing and initiating new services for the community.

The Wet Season caused many difficulties with service delivery, however staff worked together to overcome obstacles and managed to deliver essential groceries to people isolated on their Homelands.
Major preparation was undertaken by Barlmarrk management to re-establish the ‘Tucker Run’ (bush deliveries). It is due to re-commence in August 2011 (should this be 2012??). A new point of sale system has been established where EFTPOS will be available to Outstation residents. Satellite and scanning equipment have been purchased, and procedures worked well given the nature of remote location operations. This will be a great service for the Outstations.
Software upgrades to all Barlmarrk equipment has seen some good efficiency savings.

Barlmarrk employs twenty-nine staff—fifteen on CDEP, seven salary staff, and seven junior and casual Balandas (Non-Indigenous). Training for staff has been ongoing. Oliver Ankin commenced his Certificate III in Retail, and six Indigenous staff achieved forklift tickets. Orientation for new employees remains a work in progress.
Barlmarrk has re-assessed its OH&S strategies. Management purchased new steps, picking ladders for the storeroom, and an elevated work platform for the forklift to improve workplace safety for staff.

Barlmarrk is making great progress towards achieving its goals. With continued support from the community and BAC members, it will provide a superior service for the community and the Outstations in 2011-2012.
