Good Food Kitchen

The Good Food Kitchen (GFK) continues to prepare and sell fresh, healthy take away food in Maningrida. During the Australian government inquiry into remote community stores, GFK was identified as a benchmark enterprise amongst all Aboriginal communities, due to its commitment to providing a healthy eating alternative. 

During this financial year, all staff successfully completed Certificate II in Food Handling. Steve Sunk, the “Walk About Chef”, and GFK also coordinated two major healthy eating programs involving: the Families As First Teachers (FAFT) program at Maningrida Community Education Centre, and the “Feed Your Family” program with Money Management. All the participants leant about healthy eating and were given a rice cooker and a fry pan to take home.

Whilst the major challenge for the year was staff shortages, GFK is proud to announce that it has increased its turnover by over 80% per month since opening extended hours and growing the catering side of the business. As a result, GFK have facilitated two casual wages for Indigenous staff in 2010/2011and no longer rely on CDEP for wage subsidy.
